Having an excellent vertical jump is an important element in your basketball skills that should complement those of your dribbling skills and footwork. However, few players pay adequate attention to their vertical jump. The jumps can be done from a standing position or off a run-up, the latter often giving a high jump than the former. Thus, you need to focus on the two to increase vertical jump.
1. Standing vertical jump
Jumping from a standing point is easy to master, and it is important when taking rebounds and dunking. Gaining more height during the jump will need you to have your arms tucking in in readiness to be raised above your head as you gain a few inches by standing on your toes before making the jump. It will help you generate a more downward force that will catapult your upward thrust.
2. Running Vertical Jump
Running aids in building up the necessary momentum for a higher vertical jump. However, it requires you to factor in your speed and desired range of the jump to reach a targeted object or distance. Thus, controlled speed is vital, and you need to mark the spot that you would like to take off from when jumping up for the dunk.
Both jumping option will need you to focus on your penultimate step, which is a technique that lowers your center of gravity to give you an advantageous position for a higher upward thrust. But, you need to condition your body to be able to make such leaps hence the need to engage in specific types of exercise that increase your vertical jump. • High-reach jumps
The exercises should be done at least twice during your weekly training. Pick any two and do at least three sets of not less than 15 reps and you will increase vertical jump.
