“7th Annual Seattle Roadster Show“

March 2006

Lake Washington High School/NEVAC Collision Repair & Refinishing instructor Milo Dullum, along with eighteen of his students participated for the sixth year in the Seattle Roadster Show. The class entered the show on two fronts this year: five students displayed their own vehicles set in a “Day on the Beach” theme. In another part of the Quest Field Exhibition Center students where involved in the “Monster Build Live” challenge. The challenge: change a standard golf cart into a highly modified wheel standing Monster golf cart. This was to be completed in three days on the show floor, in front of thousands of show visitors and participants. Both parts of the show went well beyond expectations.

The Students displaying their cars came home with five trophies and the gratification of showing off their cars and hard work with some of the finest show cars in the nation. The display was very well done and received many compliments from show attendees and show management.

The “Monster Build Live” was also an outstanding success. Day one students moved equipment, tools and cars for the show from Lake Washington High School and set up shop in the center of Quest Field Exhibition Center. The students started working Friday morning around 8:00 A.M. with a stock Quest Field Security golf cart; they dismantled, cut and chopped the body, frame and modified the front and rear suspension. They replaced the stock electric motor with a larger more powerful one, added and moved the batteries back to gain more weight so the car would do wheelies as planned. After four 14+hour days of highly technical and hard work the students finished the Monster Challenge on time with a car that will do wheelies. Success!

The best part of the whole weekend besides meeting the challenge was the positive reaction from people that came by to see what was going on. The audience thought it was great to see high school kids working together, using what they have learned while learning more to build a car in front of thousands of people. The amount of praise the students received is beyond what they ever expected and was well deserved. Two professionals worked with the kids’ - one as the demanding shop owner and the other as the knowledgeable shop manager and foreman. Phoenix Blaze, a four time contributor on the Discovery Channel TV Series “Monster Garage” with Jesse James, played the demanding shop owner. Ian Roussel, a noted custom car builder from Southern California, worked with the kids as the foreman/designer. The kids also had the pleasure to meet and joke around with the Big Schwag from Monster Garage. All three of these gentlemen declared that our kids did a great job “The Best Build and crew they have worked with” of the builds they have worked on including Monster Garage. We should all be proud of the fine example and dedication these high school students portrayed while working in front the many thousands of show goers. Our students acted like adults, showed responsibility and were good representatives of all high school kids. A big thank you to Jason Wilson and Nichole Kinsey, from HotrodShows.com, the promoters of the Seattle Roadster Show, for inviting and believing in our kids to do a good job in the Seattle Roadster Show and Monster Build.

There will be coverage of the Monster build on the Car Crazy Central.com website in a few days.
