Carpentry/Building Construction Program

October 2004

This year is the 30th anniversary of the Edmonds School District and the Lynnwood Rotary Foundation house-building project. Since 1975, students from the Edmonds, Shoreline, Bellevue, Lake Washington, and Northshore School Districts have built or remodeled homes to meet and exceed industry standards. These homes stand as proof of quality hands-on-training.

Each year the Lynnwood Rotary Foundation purchases the land, finances and monitors the construction budget and manages the home sale. Students construct the home under the guidance of instructor Myron Sollid and assistant Randy Riddle. Their combined years of experience in home construction bring an abundance of industry expertise to the project. Students learn entry-level carpentry skills currently used in the industry. This gives the student a strong advantage when seeking employment in the building trades. Skills include blueprint reading, estimating, zoning and building codes, job site development, forming, pouring and finishing concrete, floor installation, wall and roof framing, siding, interior finishing and roofing.

Many graduates of this program enter the workforce directly, join the Carpenters Union Apprenticeship Training Program or enroll in a 2-4 year college program in construction and construction management.
